International schools in the United Kingdom

What this entry covers

In the UK the term "international school" is used less often than elsewhere. Most fee-paying schools call themselves independent schools, and a smaller group uses the international label, often because they teach the IB or an American curriculum. The United Kingdom section of International Schools DB lists schools that teach international curricula, and there is a separate list of international schools in London, where most of them are.

State schools are an option for many families

Children who live in the UK with the right to do so can usually attend state schools free of charge, and admissions are handled by the local council. Rules for children whose parents hold particular visas differ, so check with the council for the area where you will live. Many families relocating for a few years compare a good local state school with an international school before deciding.

Curriculum and qualifications

State and most independent schools in England follow, or closely track, the National Curriculum and lead to GCSEs and A levels. Scotland has its own system and qualifications. International schools are more likely to offer the IB Diploma or American high school diplomas with Advanced Placement courses.

Editor's notes

  • Boarding is common in the independent sector. Ask about guardianship arrangements if your child will board while you live abroad.
  • School inspection reports are public. Ofsted inspects state schools in England, and the Independent Schools Inspectorate inspects many independent schools.
  • In London, journey time often decides the shortlist more than anything else.
